A Greener Wire Duct

In our ongoing efforts to be as “green” a panel shop as we can be, one new initiative is helping us be better stewards to the planet. We are now using recyclable wire duct in many of our panels.

To be clear, the wire duct from our vendors has always been technically recyclable, but without the “3” symbol on the product, the recyclers wouldn’t touch it. As a result, a lot of wire duct went straight into the landfill. We’re talking about a lot of waste! If the wire duct comes in six or seven-foot lengths and we cut off a foot, that is a wasted piece bound for the landfill.

A few months ago, we began requesting the recyclable symbol from one of our vendors. They responded very quickly to the request, and before long, the symbol was placed on their products.

The recycling "3" means our discarded wire duct is accepted by our recycling service.

“We want to be good stewards of the environment,” says VP of Business Operations Evan Coulter. “We don’t like throwing so much away from the panel-making process.”

Operations Support Manager Zach Fothergill says using the recyclable wire duct is just one more step in UCEC’s efforts to be a “greener” panel shop that include cardboard, office paper, scrap metal from the Steinhauer and wire cutting recycling.

“This recycling symbol is important to UCEC because it represents our efforts to reduce waste,” he notes. "We know our customers care about efforts to minimize environmental waste, too."
