Gumby or Nopey?

By Mark Inboden

I still love cartoons and animation. I always find “hidden” humor and insights by watching them. I often think our business model is based on the character Gumby: “We bend without breaking."

Recently we had a customer ask us for help in storing a project for longer than anticipated. Our first reaction was as “Gumby," not “Nopey." Gumby is always flexible, and can “bend” to take care of his customers needs.  Whereas Gumby’s dog Nopey only says “Nope."

How long can you stay in business by saying Nope? Our customers are asking for help in solving a problem. Too many times I have encountered businesses that act as “blockheads” and just create more turmoil for their customers by not being flexible.

Here at UCEC, we pride ourselves on being there for the customer. We change our schedules if a customer changes theirs. We consider many solutions to alleviate problems our customers might encounter in project deadlines and shipments. The only thing we are “Nopey” about is the quality of our end product.

Mark is President and CEO of UCEC.
