I blogged last year that fall is my favorite time of the year. I’m ready for cooler weather, leaves and cloudy skies. We have the shop door rolled up, and each day, we can feel fall advancing in the fresh air.
Although fall brings with it back-to-school routines and the beginning of a slew of holidays to look forward to, work at UCEC in many ways resists fall’s rhythms. We don’t take a summer vacation and close up the shop. We aren’t ramping back up after a quiet summer. We are trying harder every day to be better than we were last year. Last month. Last week.
A lot of people say they are trying to stay one step ahead of their competition. I don’t follow that train of thought. I want to stay ahead of the “old” UCEC. I want us to be better than we were 10 years ago, five years ago and better than we were yesterday. Simply put, I want UCEC to be the best it can be.
We try to outrun yesterday by constantly learning and innovating. Next week, Zach Fothergill and Morgan Burriss will travel to Chicago to attend the International Manufacturing Technology Show to learn about the latest innovations in our field. Garrod Massey traveled this year to Chicago for UL listings classes and then returned to the shop to teach his team.
UCEC wants to be at the forefront of new tech that affects our industry. What’s the next big thing? We plan to know what it is. Our employees understand that we are helping them be the best they can be, too. We offer personal development coaching; one-on-one training and opportunities for advancement. We keep moving forward.
I don’t want the measuring stick to be someone else. I want it to be UCEC.
