I’ve blogged before about UCEC’s emphasis on working hard and also playing hard. I take my own advice and get away with my family from time to time for rest and relaxation. The last six months have been very busy for UCEC and I was ready for a break!

This year, our vacation was to Hawaii. We met my parents and my sister and her family on the island of Kauai where we rented a house. The cousins had a blast playing together, and of course, we made sure to do traditional Hawaiian activities such as visiting old plantations, attending a luau and sending the kids on snorkeling and surfing lessons.

I really wanted to make it a priority to see Pearl Harbor, so while the rest of the group headed back to the mainland, my family traveled to Oahu at the end of our time on Kauai to see the USS Arizona Memorial.

It was amazing. It’s one thing to see the black and white footage from movies and TV, but is really powerful to see the results in person. We also toured the USS Missouri battleship, which is where the Japanese signed the surrender papers.

Surrounded by these two bookends of the war, it got me thinking. There was one good thing that came from that day, and that was the uniting of our nation. And just like here at UCEC, once you have everyone moving in the same direction, it is amazing what can be accomplished.

Evan is Vice President of Business Operations at UCEC.
